Guru Predicts — NFL Week 4

Posted in Broncos/NFL on September 29th, 2006

Ahh yes, the relaxing feeling of the BYE Week. Looks like I’ll be able to enjoy some football, though my wife will be on pins and needles watching her Patriots. No BYE for the Guru, though, as picks still need to be made, and the after last week the season is starting to turn around for me. Here we go -

LAST WEEK - Straight 9-5
Spread 10-4

OVERALL - Straight 29-17(.586)
Spread 23-23(.500)

San Francisco @ Kansas City -7 1/2 - That’s a lot of points. K.C. is still going to battle with their #2 quarterback, and the 49′ers have played well so far this season, having scored a ton of points already. I am putting my faith in the Chiefs defense, and with two weeks to prepare thing Huard and Johnson will do enough offensively to put some points on the board. I am counting on a defensive or special teams TD to put me over the top. Give the points, I like the Chiefs to win big for their 1st W.

Chiefs 30 - 17

Miami @ Houston +4 1/2 - Every team in the NFL is going to win at some point. For the Houston Texans it’s going to come this weekend, when they welcome in the disappointing Miami Dolphins. Daunte Culpepper continued to struggle in barely getting past the Titans last weekend at home, and on the road, against a Texan team that can score some points, is a recipe for disaster. I think the Dolphins are going to be a good team under Nick Saban, but they simply put too much faith in a QB coming off major knee surgery, who probably isn’t as good as Cris Carter and Randy Moss made him look to be. I’ll take the points, and take the Texans to win straight up.

Texans 28 - 24

Dallas @ Tennessee +9 1/2 - My dis-taste for T.O. has now branched out to any team that employs him. I have always considered Parcells an over-rated coach, and the way he acted during that press conference the other day was a disgrace. That said, with everything that has gone down the past week it is hard for me to fathom that the Cowboys will be ready to be 10 points better than anyone on the road. They’ll get the win, but the Titans will play them tough. Take the points…

Cowboys 24 - 17

Indianapolis -9 1/2 @ NY Jets - For the second time in 4 weeks the Colts travel to the Meadowlands, this time to face the surprising 2-1 Jets. A possible playoff preview?? Ummm, not quite. Kudos go out to Eric Mangini, who has done an excellent job getting a bad team to be competitive, and to Chad Pennington who was written off by most fans and media alike. This game will be a wake up call, however, becuase the Jets just don’t play very good defense. 10 points is alot to give a home team, but in this case it seems pretty comfortable. A lot of big plays for the Colts, and an easy win, give the points.

Colts 30 - 10

Minnesota @ Buffalo -1 1/2 - Buffalo dominated the Jets last weekend as Willis McGahee ran for over 150 yards, while J.P Losman threw for over 300. The result? A big, fat loss. The Vikings did a little giving of their own last week at home against the Bears. This is going to be a tough, old-fashioned football game, and the elements could be a factor. The Bills defense can play and the offense is starting to come around. The spread shows this as a pick ‘em game, and when that happens I like the home team more times than not. Bills get a big win.

Bills 14 - 10

San Diego -2 1/2 - Baltimore - Talk about must-see TV. My Sunday Ticket will be changing back and forth between the Bengals/Pats and Chargers/Ravens. Both these teams have played some dominating defense, though the Ravens did give up some big plays last weekend in Cleveland. Shawn Merriman may be a better Ray Lewis than Ray-Ray himself, and this game might be a true passing of the torch from Lewis to Merriman. Philip Rivers has yet to really be tested, but when you have #21 lining up behind ya it has to feel pretty good. It a tough, hard nosed game, I like the Chargers to make more plays on offense than the Ravens, and to come back with a big road win. Give the field goal to Baltimore, SD won’t need it.

Chargers 17 - 13

New Orleans +6 1/2 - Carolina - As bad as 2005 was for the New Orleans Saints they managed to win 3 football games. One of those games came against the Panthers in Raleigh. Can lighning strike twice? I was all over the Saints beating the Falcons last week in the emotional return to the Superdome. There is only so much emotion to spread around and the Saints are do for a bit of a hangover, and this week against a Panther team that needs this game alot more than the Saints seems like the perfect time. Another call out to Elias Sports Bureau for the last time a 3-0 team was a TD dog to a 1-2 team. Way too many points, and the Saints are alot better than alot of peple think. I like the Panthers to win, but I’ll take those points…all the way to the bank.

Panthers 24 - 21

Arizona @ Atlanta -7 1/2 - I had this one pegged in the pre-season. The Cardinals have some nice pieces, but that offensive line is, well, offensive frankly, and the defense still gives up way too many big plays. The Cardinals had no business losing to the Rams last week, and the clock is ticking on Kurt Warner. If he gets off to a slow start in this game don’t be surprised to see Matt Leinart by half-time. As for the Falcons, who could blame them for being a bit cranky for playing the part of teh bad guy in the beautiful story of the New Orleans Saints. Now they get to take it all out on the Cards, and the results could get ugly. Give the points, the Falcons won’t need them.

Falcons 27 - 14

Detroit +5 1/2 @ St. Louis - Mike Martz returns to St. Louis, this time as the O-Coordinator of the putrid Lions to face a Rams team that stole one in Arizona last week. AS we know around here at the MHR the Rams play pretty tough at home. They haven’t scored a TD at home, though, and that pressure may have them start to press. Martz is goiong to have something up his sleeve and I really think the Lions are going to play hard for Martz and Head Coach Rod Marinelli. The Rams will win, but I think I’ll take the points.

Rams 24 - 20

Cleveland -2 1/2 @ Oakland - One team is bad, but plays and tries really hard. The other, eeekh! The Raiders are just a mess. Their owner shows up everywhere in a sweatsuit. The O-Coordinator was running a bed and breakfast 4 months ago. Their starting QB is making his first start, EVER, and their star player is pissed. Who do you think is going to win? The Browns are a better team than they were last year, and the Raiders are worse, and the Browns still beat them in Oakland in ‘05. Charlie Frye won a lot of fans over with his gutsy performance against Baltimore last week, and the Browns offense showed signs of life with several big plays. They should have won last week, they will win this week. Give the points, take the Browns.

Browns 13 - 9

Jacksonville -2 1/2 @ Washington - Right about now Joe Gibbs has to be wondering what the hell is got himself into. The Redskins are lousy, they can’t score any points, their QB is over the hill, the defense is full over overpaid, under performing vets, and a loss to the Jags and their season could be over. The Jags can’t be happy in their own right. Jack Del Rio’s bunch reminded all of us why they don’t get any respect, going to Indy, playing the perfect gameplan, and still losing by 7 to the Colts. If the Jags are ever going to get the respect they desire they are going to need to start winning big raod games, They can get that started this Sunday with a win over the Redskins. Though I don;t think the Redskins are a very good team, Fed Ex Field is a touogh place to play, and to win there the Jags are going to have to play well. It won’t be pretty, and it won’t be easy, but the Jags get it done. Give the points.

Jags 17 - 13

New England @ Cincinnati -6 1/2 - The Patriots have not last back to back regualr season games in over 3 years, a span of 56 games. This game reminds me of last year when the Patriots were struggling and went on the road to Atlanta, beating the Falcons in the dome, and getting their season untracked. Can the same happen? All good things come to an end, and the Patriots just don;t have the offesnive firepower to keep up with Carson Palmer and the Bengals. The Bengals proved their mettle last week, getting dominated for 3 quarters before scoring on back to back plays after turnovers to beat the Steelers. The Pats’ will play hard, and keep it close for a while, but the Benglas will pull away and cover rather easily, give the points.

Bengals 28 - 17

Seattle +3 1/2 @ Chicago - This game looked like a classic, until Shaun Alexander came up lame with a broken bone in his foot, and even though the power of prayer seemingly healed the injury it didn’t change Mike Holmgren’s mind, and Alexander will sit. Even without the reigning MVP, the Seahawks have a lot of weapons, and this game could really boost the confidence of the team if they can go in and knock off the Bears. Rex Grossman did not play well last week for the Bears, but when it counted made the big play to get the go ahead TD. Both teams are 3-0 and this game could go a long way towards deciding home-field advantage in the playoffs. With Alexander, I think the Seahawks win, without him, they fall just short. OT wouldn’t be a surprise, but I like the Bears, take the points.

Bears 20 - 17

Green Bay @ Philadelphia -10 1/2 - The Monday Night affair brings us the latest chaptor in the Brett Favre saga, and it may be unwatchable. Philly rebounded from the collapse against the Giants to throttle the 49′ers, while Brett looked great in Detroit, getting the Packers their first win of the year. I’ll make it short and sweet…The Eagles were embarrassed on their own field by how that game against the Giants went down. They now get to make amends on their home field, in front of their home fans, against a bad football team, and this time the Eagles won’t lift off the accelerator. Favre doesn’t play well from behind, and the turnover carousel will be in full motion. Give the points, Eagles win easaily.

Eagles 31 - 10

NFL Police Blotter

Posted in Broncos/NFL on September 28th, 2006

Is it me or does it seem there is some sort of legal wrangling going on daily in the NFL? For that reason, I am starting a new feature here at the TSG, and creatively calling it “Police Blotter”.

*–We’ve got several stories this week, and unfortunitely we start with our own Sam Brandon, who turned himself in to authorities yesterday –

DENVER — Denver Broncos safety Sam Brandon turned himself in to Douglas County court officials Wednesday after a warrant was issued for his arrest, prosecutors said.Brandon, 27, faces a charge of violating a restraining order and violation of his bond conditions, both misdemeanors, district attorney spokeswoman Kathleen Walsh said.Despite prosecutor objections, a judge released Brandon on a personal recognizance bond. He was due in court Nov. 17 for a pretrial conference on the new charges and a domestic violence case from July 2005.Brandon was fingerprinted and photographed at the jail. Walsh did not release additional details.

Neither Broncos officials nor Brandon immediately returned a phone message left at the team’s office.

Team spokesman Paul Kirk declined comment.

A fourth-round pick by Denver in 2002, Brandon faces a charge of third-degree assault and a charge of criminal mischief, both misdemeanors, stemming from his arrest July 4, 2005, officials have said. Details of his arrest were not immediately available.

I guess if this is going to happen, it’s best that it goes down during a BYE week.

*–The Half-Way House that is the Cincinnati Bengals made news again this week, with LB Odell Thurman having his 4 week suspension extended to the full season for blowing a .17 after being pulled over by Ohio State Patrolman –

CINCINNATI — Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Odell Thurman, already banned for the first four games of 2006 for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy, was suspended Wednesday for the rest of the season following his arrest on a charge of drunken driving.Thurman was arrested about 3 a.m. Monday, hours after the Bengals beat division rival Pittsburgh 28-20.Police said Thurman’s blood alcohol was 0.18 percent when he was arrested, more than twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent in Ohio. Thurman is due in court Oct. 2, the day his initial suspension for missing a drug test was to end.The Bengals were on the practice field when the suspension was announced, and coach Marvin Lewis was not immediately available for comment. Earlier, quarterback Carson Palmer noted that he saw Thurman cleaning out his locker at Paul Brown Stadium.

“I think everybody saw that and realized at some point you’re not going to get a second chance, a third chance, a fourth chance,” Palmer said.

“It comes down to decision-making. Coach Lewis is fed up with harping on Odell about doing the right thing at the right time and not being at the wrong place at the wrong time,” Palmer said. “At some point, I think Marvin’s done with it.”

But Palmer said the actions of his teammates — six Bengals players have faced various charges since December — have had no effect on the play of the 3-0 team.

“I think we’ve got a couple guys who’ve gotten mixed up and made bad decisions,” Palmer said. “In no way will that affect the rest of this team or any other individual players.”

At a news conference Monday, Lewis was critical of Thurman’s behavior

“I am not pleased,” Lewis said then. “It’s not right, it’s not what we stand for, it’s not what the National Football League should represent.”

Thurman, a second-round draft pick from Georgia last year, started all but one game in 2005. His arrest came less than a week after commissioner Roger Goodell visited Cincinnati and reminded players of their responsibility to stay out of trouble and represent the league honorably.

“He just obviously doesn’t understand the privilege and the right to play in the National Football League,” Lewis said. “This will probably be dealt with very severely.”

Rookie Reggie McNeal and Chris Henry, both Bengals wide receivers, were in the vehicle when Thurman was arrested, but they were not charged.

Henry has been arrested four times and convicted twice, avoiding jail time so far. He pleaded guilty to marijuana possession in northern Kentucky, and this month pleaded guilty to a weapon charge in Orlando, Fla.

This is getting rediculus. Sure, you have to take a chance on a guy every now and then, but so many of these players have histories that it’s going to become a distraction at some point.

*–The San Diego Chargers are back into the news as well. A few weeks after LB Steve Foley was shot 3 times by an off-duty police officer, DEA agents arrested SS Terrence Kiel on drug charges –

SAN DIEGO — Chargers starting strong safety Terrence Kiel will miss Sunday’s game at Baltimore following his arrest at team headquarters on felony drug charges.Drug Enforcement Administration officials said Wednesday that Kiel admitted to shipping at least two parcels of prescription cough syrup to Texas. While Kiel did not tell the DEA his motive, the agency in Texas has found widespread abuse of codeine-based cough syrup mixed with soft drinks or drugs and referred to as “lean,” said John S. Fernandes, the special agent in charge of the San Diego office.A pint bottle of “lean” can cost between $200 and $325 on the street, he said.Kiel grew up in Lufkin, about 120 miles north of Houston, and played at Texas A&M.

Chargers general manager A.J. Smith said Kiel would be paid even though he will miss Sunday’s game at Baltimore.

“He’s been informed to stay home and take care of personal business,” Smith said, adding that Kiel is due back with the team on Monday.

“I’m really not interested at this point in commenting on anything about the matter,” coach Marty Schottenheimer said.

Clinton Hart, who will start in Kiel’s spot, said the defensive backs met Wednesday morning.

“We have to regroup and make that fist a little bit tighter. Kiel’s still our boy and we’re supporting him 100 percent,” Hart said. “We’re going to go out there and win this game with him on our backs.”

Kiel was arrested on two counts of transporting a controlled substance and three counts of possession for sale of a controlled substance. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday.

The DEA is investigating where Kiel got the cough syrup, who else may be involved and the intent.

Two federal law enforcement officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the ongoing investigation, said quart bottles full of what appears to be prescription cough syrup were found at Kiel’s house. Both officials said Kiel admitted to financial difficulties when interviewed by agents.

Kiel is making $500,000 this year, his fourth with the Chargers.

The player was jailed Tuesday and released on bail.

Kiel’s agent, Vann McElroy, said he couldn’t comment on specifics of the case.

“Terrence is a good kid. We just have to wait and see,” McElroy said.

Fernandes said the two shipments Kiel admitted to sending to Texas each contained prescription cough syrup that had been repackaged in pint-sized water bottles.

On Tuesday, Kiel was called off the practice field after authorities arrived at Chargers headquarters. Kiel was taken into the locker room, detained and read his rights, Fernandes said. His locker wasn’t searched, but authorities searched his car, then took him to his house to execute a search warrant.

According to an affidavit for a search warrant made public Wednesday, FedEx managers searched a package Kiel mailed with his FedEx account in June and found 15 bottles of Prometh prescription cough syrup in the box. A boarding pass found inside the box led DEA agents to an address Kiel used to register a car. Three bottles of Prometh were seized last week at that address.

Kiel paid cash to send a second package to Texas last Thursday, prompting a FedEx manager to contact the DEA, according to the affidavit.

Fernandes said codeine-based cough syrup can be used to enhance, mitigate or temper other drugs, including cocaine and PCP.

“It goes right to the heart of what really is fueling an already out-of-control, raging fire of abuse of pharmaceutical drugs,” Fernandes said.

Kiel was a second-round draft pick in 2003.

Three months after being drafted, Kiel was shot three times during an attempted carjacking in Houston. Kiel returned to play in all 16 games as a rookie, including eight starts.

It was the second run-in with the law by a Chargers player this month.

Outside linebacker Steve Foley was shot three times outside his suburban home on Sept. 3 by an off-duty Coronado police officer who suspected him of drunk driving. Foley will miss the entire season and forfeit at least $775,000 in pay.

“I’m very disappointed and very concerned,” Smith said. “I’m not the least bit happy with all these things.”

Another team, like the Bengals, that are too good to have these types of things crop up. Marty can’t be too happy.

*–Our court-room tour comes to an end in Miami, where former Bronco Keith Traylor is facing a suspension for violating the League’s personal conduct policy –

MIAMI — Dolphins defensive tackle Keith Traylor faces disciplinary action from the NFL for violating the league’s personal conduct policy, The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported Wednesday.Traylor is serving a one-year probation sentence for two misdemeanor charges stemming from a May 16 arrest in Oklahoma on charges of driving under the influence and possession of a controlled dangerous substance.Traylor also was charged with a felony for ripping a smoke detector off a jail wall, but Tania Bible, legal secretary for the Mayes County, Okla., district attorney, told the newspaper the charge was reduced to a misdemeanor when he was sentenced to a one-year deferred sentence on July 19.Bible told the newspaper that Traylor paid $100 to replace the smoke detector and received probation for the DUI charge. The controlled substance charge was dropped. If Traylor completes his probation, both charges will be dropped.

However, Traylor is still subject to NFL discipline. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told the Sun-Sentinel that “it will be reviewed under the appropriate league policy.”

According to the policy, if a player is convicted or pleads guilty to a crime, he is subject to discipline at the discretion of the commissioner.

Traylor, 37, had two sacks in the Dolphins’ first win of the season last Sunday, a 13-10 victory over the Titans.

Not a bad start, though it is sad that I would even have the material to support such a feature….

Ok, so this might not be Broncos specific, but I do have the Samsung ACE and I love the service. Well, according to Money.com, the service will be no more, as soon as today. Hmmm, does that let me out of my contract???

Another Great Idea Ahead Of It’s Time.

Terrell Owens Suicide Attempt

Posted in Broncos/NFL on September 27th, 2006

This is just crazy. It was reported last night that Terrell Owens was taken to the hospitol after having an allergic reaction to pain medication he is taking after having an operation on his hand on September 18. Well, that has all changed this morning, with this!

Reportedly, Owens took up to 30 pills and when the police askend Owens if he tried to harm himself he answered, “Yes”.

This is stunning news around the NFL, and even in Denver, which initially was the team Owens himslef wanted to go to. Sometimes the best moves are the ones you don’t make.

The guy needs help, and I hope it proves this fact to everyone.

Here is the story from ESPN.com

And a copy of the POLICE REPORT.
UPDATE — Let me just say this….Now that the press conference has come and gone, and everybody essentially denied everything, and made the police and rescue workers out to be liars, let me give my 2 cents for what it’s worth….

First, T.O. explains the whole thing as an accident involving his pain meds and supplements. He’s happy, and he doesn’t remember a thing about the “incident”. Doesn’t remember answering teh questions of whether he took a bunch of pain pills and whether or not he was trying to hurt himself.

Secondly, did you see the body language of the “publicist” who actually placed the 911 call and told police and rescuew workers that T.O. was non-responsive, and that she was trying to pry pills out of his mouth, etc. came back today and said, oops, nope didn’t mean any of that. She also said that T.O. had told her he was depressed, and today she said he never told her that.

So, for those of us keeping track at home, T.O has been misquoted by the San Francisco 49′ers, The San Francisco media, the Philadelphia Eagles, The Philly media, his agent, his agent’s brother who wrote a book for him, himself in his book, his publicist, the Dallas P.D. and Dallas rescue workers, and somewhere and 911 tape.

This is the last I’ll talk about this, and waste TSG space with it, but it simply amazes me that people actually buy this, and believe it. Hey, if the guy wants to off himself it really isn’t any of my business, but to clog up the media for 12 hours with this idiacy and then come out and hand us a bunch of B.S. and expect us to buy it, well no thanks….

Sorry About That….

Posted in Broncos/NFL, Indians/MLB on September 27th, 2006

I know, I know.  There has been a lack of posting over here.  Sorry about that.  Truth is, I have been focusing on my Broncos Blog, and have kind of neglected my original home.  Shame on me!  There has been alot going on, and with basketball trainig camps set to tip-off next week, along with the NHL regualr season, and college basketball soon after, the sports world is about to get crazy.  Oh yea, and the baseball playoffs…

Since my Tribe is just playing out the string, I figured we could chit-chat about them quickly.  I must be honest and say that I am cautiously optimistic about 2007 and beyond.  The infusion of young players have sparked a nice run the past 6 weeks, and it looks like some of these guys can play.  Ryan Garko looks like a guy that’ll be a true four hitter.  Not necessarily because of his raw power, but becuase he has a great eye at the plate and the dude flat out rakes with guys in scoring position.  I really like Franklin Gutierrez and even Andy marte has started to hit.  Add those guys to Travis Hafner, who will return at full strength next season, and arguably the AL’s best player in Grady Sizemore and the offense is shaping up nicely.

As for the pitching, C.C. Sabathia, Cliff Lee and Jeremy Sowers are locks for the rotation.  Jake Westbrook can come back, and Paul Byrd is under contract, but I don’t think the Indians are sold on either.  Fausto Carmona has recovered nicely from his disaster in the bullpen, and Jeremy Guthrie is also waiting in the wings.  I wouldn’t be surprised if the Indians look for a verteran, upper tier pitcher this off-seaosn to be a leader for the staff, similar to Kevin Millwood last season.

The big question will ultimately be, Is Eric Wedge the right guy for the job?  It is looking more and more likely that he will be back next season, much to the dismay of many.  I have been calling for a change since mid-June and my stance hasn’t changed.  What we may see from the Indians next season is a team created that favors Wedge moe than the 2006 version of the Indians.  Eric Wedge just does not get through to or motivate veteran players.  He has been successful in the minor leagues and early on in Cleveland because he has primarily had younger players.  Mark Shapiro added some verterans this past season and it blew up in his face.  I have to believe Wedge is going to be ginven one more chance to lead this team to the playoffs before a change is made, though I still am pining for Tony Pena.

Here are a couple thoughts on some other stuff –

*–The “Madden Curse” has struck again, with NFL MVP and Madden cover-boy Shaun Alexander on the shelf with a broken bone in his foot.  Think about some of the guys that have graced the cover, only to completely fall apart that season - Marshall Faulk, Ray Lewis, Daunte Culpepper, Donavan McNabb.  In my opinion, they couldn’t pay me enough to be on that cover…..They can have it!

*–Time to put the Ryder Cup to bed.  Not becuase we are losing, getting killed every two years, no, but becuase we simply DO NOT CARE.  Why hold an event when one of the participants doesn’t give a damn about it.  Frankly, if I were Phil Mickelson, or Chris Dimarco, I would be utterly embarrassed.  Tiger Woods, who has never done well in Ryder Cup play, actually played better this time, but if he wants to be considered the best EVER he is going to need to bring the Ryder Cup back to the U.S.

*–Can this really be happening?  On September 20, only 7 days ago, the St. Louis Cardinals led the NL Central by 8 1/2 games over the Houston Astros.  The lead was so big MLB was planning on not rescheduling a rain out game between the Cards and Giants.  All of a sudden, the Cards have lost 7 games in a row and the Astros have won 7 straight.  Looks like that make-up game may be needed.   Think about it.  Right now, the MEts would be considered the favorite in the NL playoffs, though no team really has the pitching to be considered a real scare….Except for the Astros, that is, who could throw Clemens, Pettite and Oswalt in a short series.  Yikes.  I don;t know much, but I do know this….Mets fans had better be hoping the Cardinals get it going, and fast!

*–There is a lot of talk about various records that will never be broken…Ripken’s streak, Dimaggio’s streak, etc.  Well, one that will never, EVER be broken is the Byron Nelson consecutive tournaments streak.  In 1945, Nelson won an incredible 18 tourneys, including 11 in a row.  It’s news today, becuase the holder of those records passed away yesterday at 94.  It is widely considered the Jack Nicklaus is the greatest golfer that ever lived, but Byron Nelson put up the best year ever since and ever going forward.
