Here are some of my thoughts on what’s going on with the LBJ Contract fiasco…
***It feels good to be right. Maybe I am gloating a little early, but I worte right here in this space that LeBron James would sign a contract similar to Tim Duncan’s. After first ignoring this and calling what it appears James is going to do an innovation ESPN and other outlets started reporting that Duncan did the same thing. The Spurs went on to win the Title in Duncan’s “walk” year and the point became moot. The same could happen for James. Either way, LeBron once again showed intelligence beyond his years. Sure, it may appear he is greedy, or he doesn’t want to be in Cleveland. I don’t think that is the case at all. LeBron wants to be the boss of LeBron. There is risk on his end too, to the tune of $20 Mill.
Face it Cleveland Fans, when you have a Michael Jordan type player playing in your city this is always going to be part of it. New York, LA, Chicago writers will always try to plant the seeds of conspiracy. No one who lives there can understand why Lebron wouldn’t want to play there. Unfortunitely for them the money isn’t tied to market anymore. With the internet and satellite tv and the like players can be seen 24/7 regardless of where they play.
All that being said, from the Cavs point of view they are going to be very careful themselves. Let’s face it, the Cavs are going to do everything they can to make LeBron happy. What they cannot do however is be held hostage by ONE player. The NBA is still a team game, and if Game 7 against the Pistons showed anything it proved that one great players cannot beat a good team by himself. As this thing plays out, the Cavs will not let LeBron walk for nothing, and they surely won’t make a Vince Carter type of deal.
As for me? I am going to enjoy the next 3 or 4 years regardless of what contract James signs. I look at the glass as half full. The Cavs have the best player on the planet. They need one or two pieces to fit with him and need some luck and they will be right there. When the dust settles we’ll see where we stand. Hopefully it is at a parade down Euclid Ave.
