Don’t Fret, LeBron WILL Sign!

Posted in Cavs/NBA on June 30th, 2006

The countdown is on. Can you hear it? Kinda like the entrancing sound effects used for the clock on ‘24′. Everyone in Cleveland is counting the seconds until the Cavs can offer all-world phenom LeBron James a Max extension. This has been a hot topic for years in C-Town, essentially since the mintue they drafted ‘Bron. The race to build enough pieces around James to satisfy him so he wouldn’t pull a Jim Thome began that night and has continued until now culminating with a successful draft night on Wednesday. Even so, the worry worts out there are still holding their collective breath until word comes out on exactly what LeBron will do.

To be honest, I really can’t blame them. Most don’t understand the League’s hard to read, even harder to understand CBA. They also remember quite vividly the Carlos Boozer fiasco. Not to worry Cavs fans, what happened with Boozer CAN NOT happen with James.

I could get into the legal mumbo-jumbo of the CBA for you, but I don’t want to bore you. I will simply give you one small phrase to help you out. 5 years, 80 Million Dollars. I’ll give you a minute to read it again. 5 YEARS, EIGHTY MILLION DOLLARS!!! Why is it significant you ask? Here are a couple of reasons.

1 — The Cavaliers are the ONLY team that can offer James a contract at this time. You see, the original contract James signed with the Cavs was a 4-year deal worth about 12 Million Dollars, or roughly 3 Mil/year. James has played 3 years meaning he still IS UNDER contract for another season. The CBA allows the Cavs to extend James’ original rookie contract after the 3rd year for a maximum of 5 years. No other team can offer James ANYTHING!

2 — MAX contracts are based on a percentage of the salary cap for the season the contract goes into effect, so exact figures aren’t available. Most people see the contract to be worht somewhere between 75-80 million dollars over 5 years. Again, there is a certain way that this money get distributed, not the same over 5 years, but for ease of explanation let’s say it did. Your looking at a per year of between 15-16 Million Dollars per season, guarunteed. Right now, all ‘Bron is guarunteed is next year’s slary at about $4 Million. You do the math. $80 Million large or 3 Million not so large.

3 — To expound on the last point, NBA contracts are guarunteed. If LeBron signs the extension, and decides to go Shawn Kemp on us and gain 1000 pounds he still gets paid. For LeBron it is a smart business decision. Why risk injury for the next two years to become an unrestriced free agent when he could get around 80 Mill guarunteed right now? Are you starting to get it?

It’s that simple folks. Four players from the draft Class of ‘03 are expected to sign Max extensions this summer. James, Dwayne Wade in Miami(Obvious), Carmello Anthony in Denver(Obvious) and one that might surprise you - Chris Bosh in Toronto. Yes, THAT Toronto. Bosh came out a couple months ago and stated he would sign as soon as legally possible(July 12). SO if Bosh would re-up with a team like Toronto, why wouldn’t James do the same with an up and coming Cavs team that is in his own backyard to boot.

You still don’t have to believe me, but here are some comments from ESPN NBA Insider Marc Stein on the topic:

LeBron James. Carmelo Anthony. Chris Bosh. NBA Finals MVP Dwyane Wade.

All are eligible for five-year contract extensions this offseason worth around $80 million.

Repeat that figure out loud a few times and you’ll know why we’ve continually advised fans in Cleveland, Denver, Toronto and Miami to stop fretting. There is no uncertainty here.

The four best players from the 2003 draft will sign maximum contract extensions well before the Oct. 31 deadline. Look for all four to sign this month, actually.

Yes. That includes LeBron, who was never looking to leave on-the-rise Cleveland.

At their ages especially, you don’t turn down max money to wait two more years for unrestricted free agency. You take the money immediately and then, if you want a change of scenery later, you tell your agent to figure it out.

That should be clear by now, after two months of Bosh — who’s facing a climb to contention in Toronto better measured in years — telling anyone who asks that he’ll sign his extension as soon as he’s legally able to do so on July 12.

Is that enough for you?

It has been said many times, LeBron wants to win period. He wants to be known as one of the G.O.A.T.’s. As long as the Cavs continue to show they are committed to that end LeBron will call the Q his home. With a strong 50 win season behind them, some stability in the front office, an owner determined to do whatever it takes, and the core of a strong team beginning to take shape, LeBron figures to be here a long time.

Cavs fans, feel free to exhale.

Cavaliers ‘Guarded’ About Future

Posted in Cavs/NBA on June 29th, 2006

Rumors, speculation, talk, more rumors, more talk…uhm, you get the idea. We heard alo of this and that in the weeks leading up to the NBA draft. With 3 picks, there were alot of ways the Cavaliers could have gone. In the end, it was the most logical that ended up going down, and by addressing their biggest need with both of their first two picks, things continue to better and better for the Wine and Gold.

With the 25th pick, the Cavs were surprised and delighted to see Shannon Brown of Michigan St. fall into their laps. I won’t go into stats and all that jazz. You can get that at dozen of websites. What I will say is this. Being an Ohio St. fan and watching 90% of their games the last few years, including two matchups a year with Michigan St., the Cavs got a baller. Brown is a ‘junk-yard dog’ on the defensive end and has something the Cavs have needed in the backcourt for a while — size. At 6-4, 205 Brown has the size and length to give other teams problems on the perimeter. He also has some serious hops, finishing 2nd to LeBron in a dunk contest when both were Seniors in high school. That is another important intangible that wasn’t really talked about before the draft. Being that this was LeBron’s 3rd year in the league he had played and was familier with many of the college players coming out. He had played with Shannon Brown and they showed great chemistry on the floor together. I think the Cavs got the steal of the draft with Brown, who should be able to come in and contribute right away.
Brown has some serious hops!

In the 2nd round the Cavs got fortunite again by having Texas PG Daniel Gibson fall in their laps. There was talk last week that the Cavs had given a promise to Gibson at the #25 spot, and even as late as yesterday ESPN’s Chad Ford had Gibson as a possibilty for the Cavs at 25. Not so fast my friend. After grabbing Brown the Cavs tried all they could to trade up to get Gibson only to see him fall all the way to 42. Like Brown, Gibson will need to improve his decision making at the NBA level, but let’s face it, if that is the worst things people can say about either of these guys the Cavs should be in great shape. With LeBron and Larry Hughes the Cavs already have two guys that can handle the ball and make decisions,at least the next couple of years. All we need from Gibson is the spark off the bench. The ability to creat and get to the rim. And most importantly, defend on the perimeter. It wasn’t Z or Drew that had the defensive breakdowns last year, it was the perimeter guys. Damon Jones, Sasha Pavlovic, even Eric Snow at times were more like conquistadors than on the ball defenders forcing Drew and Z into bad situations that usually ledd to dunk and/or fouls. Having athleticism up top should make Z and Drew/Anderson Verajao that much better.
Gibson adds some flair to the backcourt

Oh, the Cavs did have a third pick and chose the latest ‘Nigerian Nightmare’ Ejike Ugboaja. At 6-9, 225 he has size and is a freak athletically. That is where it ends, though and Uggy is a project for sure. He will spend the next couple of years overseas for more seasoning. I thought there were a couple of different ways Danny Ferry could have gone here, but I will reserve judgement and trust the Cavs brass, for now at least.
Raw but athletic, Uggy will have time to blossom overseas

On the local front, the surprise of the night has to be the fact that West Virgina G and Olmsted Falls native Mike Gansey went undrafted. Hopefully the Cavs have already called Gansey’s agent and got him on the summer league team. ESPN’s Jay Bilas had Gansey at #20 overall in his rankings. Either he knows something that 30 NBA teams do not, or someone is going to get a real bargains as an undrafted FA. Gansey has alot of fire and intensity and showed a knack for hitting the big shot, and I think his game will translate well to the next level….

Get Well Gammons

Posted in Indians/MLB on June 28th, 2006

A quick note of well wishes to Peter Gammons and his family on the shocking news of his brain aneurysm suffered Tuesday. Being a big baseball fan I have come to love Gammons’ work throough the years with the Boston Globe, Sports Illustrated and currently, ESPN. A lifelong Red Sox fan, Gammons ability to cover baseball as well as the Red Sox in a non-overtly biased way has garnered respect from the baseball and sports community alike. Gammons was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2004, a long deserved honor for one of the smartest men in baseball.

Though Baseball is is love, music is his passion, and like me, Gammons is a big fan of Pearl Jam and other alternative bands, and of Rock ‘N’ Roll in general. His debut album entitled ‘Never Slow Down, Never Grow Old’ featuring several players and Boston GM Theo Epstein will be released next week with all proceeds going to charity.

I am hoping for the best, with Gammons now out of surgery and resting in Intensive Care in a Boston hospital. His influence on me as a young sports fan growing up, and the knowledge I have obtained by reading and watching him is truly great and I look forward to hearing him again.

I was probably going to buy his CD before, I will definitely buy it now. Get Well Soon Peter!

Music is the Passion of Peter Gammons

LeBron V. Wade? Gimme Some 23!

Posted in Cavs/NBA on June 23rd, 2006

It seemed moments after the Miami Heat had completed their rousing comeback from an 0-2 deficit against the Dallas Mavericks to win the NBA Title everyone began to crown Dwayne Wade the darling of the NBA, and the best player from the ‘03 draft that also brought us some no names like Chris Bosh, Carmelo Anthony and some guy named LeBron James.  Inevitably, the debate between who the better player is also began with every sports columnist taking a crack at it.  I was seriously going to try to avoid it, but it is just way too much fun.  It may seem like I am biased being that I am from Cleveland, and maybe I am, but I think my argument holds enough water to deserve merit.

Let me start by saying I love D-Wade.  He plays the game the right way.  He goes hard for 48 minutes, sometimes longer, and his game seems to elevate at will.  Not known as a great outside shooter, Wade has the ability to hit big shots when he needs them, a trait shared by all the great ones.  They way he propped the Heat on his back and carried them back from the brink in the Fianls only solidified to the masses what basketball fans already knew, that this guy is freakin’ good.  But if I knew then what I know now, I would still take a High School kid from the city of Akron with the Number 1 pick 100 times out of 100.

For me, it is a slam dunk.  Obviously, the Cavs had other factors involved for taking James.  The fact that he was from their own back yard made it impossible NOT to take James.  I am positive, however, if I could ask the other GMs in the league all but one would probably select James over Wade, with Miami probably the only one that wouldn’t admit it.

When it’s all said and done, James will be looking down on D-Wade

It comes down to one question, asked in two parts.  Would the Miami Heat have won the NBA Title with LeBron James instead of Dwayne Wade?  Would the Cleveland Cavaliers have gone from 17 wins to 50 wins in 3 season with D-Wade?  The answer to part 1 is a definitive yes, and they probably would have won it last year as well.  As for part 2?  I am not to sure about that.  James just doesn’t have the pieces around him that Wade has.  I don’t fault Wade for this, he is an AWESOME player and has made the most of his opportunity.  But the pressure felt by both are polar opposites.

Wade didn’t go to the Heat with the added baggage of being the savior of a franchise.  Wade didn’t get drafted by his home-town team with expectations never seen beofre for a player, in ANY sport.  Wade went to Miami, then had Shaq dropped into his lap.  Then Mourning, and Antoine Walker and Jason William, James Posey, then Pat Riley to coach him.

James, on the other hand, did have all those pressures and expectations and exceeded all of them without breaking a sweat.  He embraced the pressure, he embraced being the savior of professional basketball in Cleveland.  He watched as the Cavs bungled the Carlos Boozer situation, then saw the team bring in Drew Gooden, Donyell Marshall, Damon Jones.  He saw Larry Hughes come in to be his Robin only to lose Larry for most of the year to injury.  All this and the Cavs STILL won 50 games and nearly beat the Pistons.  Like the jar you try to open and cannot, only to watch your wife open it with ease, the Cavs softened the Pistons for the Heat to finsih off.

Now Wade has his title and everyone wants to annoint him the greatest.  He very well might be, but when I look at the Heat and the Cavs, I see two teams going different directions.  The Cavs are a young, up and coming team.  There best years lie ahead.  The core of this team is all 30 or younger, and with three draft picks next week will only get younger.  The Heat on the other hand are peaking.  Overall the Heat is an old team.  Shaq is only a shell of what he used to be, and if he continues to use the season to get into playing shape will continue to degrade rapidly.  Mournig will probably retire.  Gary Payton is on his last leg.  Antoine Walker’s best days are behind him.  Is Jason Williams really a great player? Other than D-Wade what do the Heat really have?

The Heat will bring everyone but Zo back next year to try to repeat.  Make no mistake, they will still be a formidable team and Wade will only get better.  It is the pieces around him that are going to start to slip.

The Cavs are only going to get better, with LeBron still only 21 and Larry Hughes only 26.  Add to that Anderson Varejao, only 23, and Drew Gooden, should they decide to keep him.  The core of the this team is young and is only going to get better.

I take nothing away from D-Wade.  He is the MVP of the Finals, the first of the great draft class of ‘03 to get a ring.  He has a head start on James.  But the forcast in Cleveland for once looks better than that of South Beach.  Wade won the first battle, but James will inevitably win the war.  And the fans will get to reap the rewards of the next 10 years of great NBA Action.
