Police Blotter - C-Town’s Teams In The News For The Wrong Reasons

Posted in Broncos/NFL, Cavs/NBA, Indians/MLB on May 30th, 2006

What a month of May.  The Indians are slowly fading to oblivion.  The Cavs finished up their inspired run in the NBA Playoffs that left us counting the days until camp opens(151).  The Browns finished the draft and their first organized teams functions of the NFL “Off-Season”.  Unfortunitely, all three teams have also made the news for other, less positive reasons.  All three have had run-ins with the police, and not for the first time.

Cleveland Cavs - On May 29th Gloria James, the mother of LeBron James, pleaded No Contest and was found guilty of 4 charges, including reckless operation, speeding, disorderly conduct and physical control of a motor vehicle under the influence.  The incident occured on January 20th of this year and included Ms. James nearly hitting an unmarked car with her Cadillac Escalade.  When the officers pulled her over, she smelled of alcolohol. fought with officers as they tried to arrest her and eventually kicked the window out of a police vehicle.  True, this particular event didn’t directly invlove a Cavalier, but when it is the Mom of the most recognized names in sports, it’s news.  For her crime, James will have to attend a “alcohol is bad” class and lost her license until January 2007.
James In Happier Times...

Cleveland Browns - On May 24, Browns RB Reuben Droughns turned himself in to Littleton  and after spending the night in jail was released on $2500 bail charged with one count of Assault and two counts of Harrassment in an alledged domestic incident on May 12 involving his wife, Kellie.  Droughns and his wife apparently had an arguement which escalated into a physical confrontation.  He allegedly grabbed her and threw her to the ground and later grabbed her by the waist and threw her on the bed.  After telling him she wanted a divorce, Droughns went on to grab her and throw her out the door, causing an arm injury.  Kellie called her mom in Texas, who called Police.  Droughns was gone when police arrived and took a statement from Kellie.  Surprisingly(NOT), Kellie has made several attempts to drop the charges.  Earlier this year, Droughns beat a DUI rap in court after being pulled over after a function in Medina Oh. Drougns needs to start breaking tackles, not the law!

The latest happened just today and involved the Indians.  Lefty-Reliever Scott Sauerbeck was arrested, hiding in some bushes nonetheless, after fleeing a vehicle the Police were trying to stop for erratic driving.  Police began to follow the car after it crossed the center line.  The car then turned quickly down a side street and pulled into a driveway where Sauerbeck and the female with him jumped out and fled the vehicle.fled the vehicle.  Umm, I think that only works in the movies or on T.V.  Anyway, after a short search, officers found the two hiding under some bushes.  The female was apparently driving and was charged with DUI.  Sauerbeck was charged with a couple on Misdemeanors.Stay away from the bushes....

A wild a wooly month indeed for Cleveland’s sports franchises.  I would love to know if any other city has seen each of it’s Major Sports franchises involved in Police incidents during the same month or weekend before.  Please let me know.

In any case, let’s hope these teams can get into the news for all the right reasons and stay out of the Police Blotter…..

Lip-Smacking Good!!!

What a great weekend.  The RIbs were tremendous as always.  There are 2, count ‘em TWO, Rib Cook-offs during Memorial Day Weekend in the Cleveland Area and I had to partake in both.  My favorite from the competition in at the Tower City Ampitheatre was Butch’s, which combined an incredible sauce with fall-off-the-bone ribs that had me going back for more.  I also tried the pulled pork and it was sensational as well.  I have already ordered some of the sauce, and hope to see Butch in future competitions.
Butch doin' his thing!

There is also a Cook-Off at the Cuyahoga County Fairrounds.  A little history for you.  Back when the Guru was just a little tike, the National Rib Cook-Off was hosted at the fairgrounds.  10 years or so ago, they decided to move the competition to downtown Cleveland.  The fairgrounds, unphased by this, started their own competition.  In my opinion, the “Berea Rib Cook-off” is actually better that the one at the TCA because of the “county-fair” atmosphere and is definitely more kid friendly.

My favorite from Berea was Cowbows Barbeque from Texas.  Unfortunitely they don’t have a website that I could find, but there were incredible.  A different type of rib than Butch but equally as good.  And sadly, another Memorial Day Rib Weekend has passed.  Luckily, there are Rib events all summer long around here, so I will be able to partake in all the pork I can handle all summer long.  Here’s oinkin’ atcha!

A quick look at the weekend in sports -

*The Indians starting pitching has looked awful for the better part of 4 weeks, with the exception of C.C. Sabathia.  Down in Buffalo sits Jeremy Sowers, 6-1 with an ERA about 1.00.  Are you kidding me?  Call this kid up.  You can only get lucky with the reclamation project so many times, a Kevin Millwood last year was our time.  Jason Johnson has pitched exactly the saem way he has pitched his career.  He is over 30 game under .500 as a starter and has looked the part this year.  The rediculous contract he received this winter was a bad signing then, and a complete disgrace now.  Let the young kids that we are going to NEED the next few years get their experience this year so that they are ready next year.  I know it is probably too early to write off the season, but the Tribe is already 10+ games behind the Tigers and 9 games behind the White Sox, who crushed the Tribe 11-0 yesterday….On second thought, maybe it ISN’t too early to write off the season….

*Congrats to the Cavs for ending the Pistons run.  Well, it will officially be the Heat that beats the Pistons in the ECF, but make no mistake, it was LeBron James and the Cavaliers who pushed the Pistons to the brink.  The Pistons look tired and old against the Heat, and it was the Cavs who did it to them.  In a series they figured they would sweep, Detroit had to fight and claw for every win and emotionally are having a tough time getting up for a Miami team with revenge on its’ mind.  Kudos to the Cavs!

*In the other Conference Final, Dallas has a 2-1 advantage over the Suns.  I have a new-found re[ect for Phoenix.  How many teams would have lost a player of Amare Stoudemire’s caliber and still made it THIS far.  If there was any question about Steve Nash being the MVP these playoffs should squash them forever.  Yes, LBJ had a GREAT season, but what Nash means to the Suns is truly MVP.  Dallas, on the other hand, just continues to quietly go about their business.  Avery Johnson has brought a mental toughness to a team that had NONE under Don Nelson.  They took the best shot of the Spurs, and came back to win Game 7 on the road.  After getting punched in the face by the Suns in Game 1, they rebounded to win the last 2 rather handily.  I like this team, and like it’s chances against the Heat should they meet in the Finals.

*Sam Hornish Jr. won the Indy 500 over Marco Andretti by the slimmest of margins.  Can all the Danica Patrick talk PLEASE STOP NOW….There are better drivers to promote in this series than her.  She finished 8th, which is respectible, but not worth the constant babbling done about her by ESPN, ABC and others.  If women truly want equality, then Patrick should get the same treatment any other driver would get for having 0 career victories.  With drivers like Dan Wheldon, Sam Hornish, and a phemom with unquestionable pedigree in Marco Andretti, there ARE BETTER STORIES out there, please go find them!

*Ricky Williams in Canada.  Playing for the Toronto Argonauts.  The punch-lines are coming faster than the drug-test for Ricky, but remember this; Even though there is NO drug testing policy, Ricky CAN BE TESTED up to 10 times per month by the NFL.  So before you say Ricky is “Light-Up” the CFL, he still needs to stay clean to have any shot at a return to the Dolphins.

Pistons Find A Way….On Deck: RIBS!!!

Posted in Cavs/NBA, General on May 26th, 2006

It is simply amazing to me just how consistent the Detroit Pistons are.   Facing a near “Must-Win” in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Heat, the Pistons did what they always do: play stifling defense, and win.  Sure, they gave up a big lead, but in the end the W is all that matters.

This team just has an uncanny knack for forgetting about the last game and focusing on the task at hand.  I don’t think they will win this series.  I think my Cavs took a little more out of them than they had hoped and Shaq got the rest he so vitally needs this time of year.  But to win, the Heat had better stomp on the Pistons and win every game they are in a position to, or they will meet the same fate as Cleveland.

One of my personal favs...Memorial Day Weekend is upon us, and for me it signifies alot.  I actually start to pay attention to baseball, considering the last two months an extended spring training.  But in Cleveland, it also is National Rib Cook-off time with two events to be enjoyed.  I will be heafing to both and will supply my detailed review.  If you are a Rib-lover, this is the place for you….!

Plummer Continues to Embarass

Posted in Broncos/NFL on May 24th, 2006

The latest Story involving Jake Plummer should come as a shock to now one and comes just weeks after the Denver Broncos put the QB on notice by drafting his heir-apparent, Jay Cutler in the NFL Draft.  Inthis latest “OOPS”, the Schick-Challenged QB allegedly cut off another driver, and after getting a horn job, proceded to get out of his Honda Truck at a red-light and kick the Ford Truck the “victom” was driving.  Plummer, of course, denies the incident, but should we believe him?

This is the same guy that flipped off the home crowd on National TV becuase they were riding him after a pick.  He apologized.  This is the same guy that called and berated an Entertainment Columnist in Denver after she outed which cherleader Plummer was dating at the time.  Again, he apologized.  In the past he has also cancelled a wedding within hours of the ceremony because of second thoughts and has had run-ins with fans.

Look, I am a Denver Bronco fan, and being the Quarterback of the Broncos might just be the hardest job in sports when you really think about it.  Remember, this is the same town that reported what kind of candy John Elway gave out at Halloween, that’s a tough town.  Plummer needs to cool the antics, however and remember just who it is that pays his salary.  Let’s face it, the Broncos are a first-class organization and they DESPISE negative publicity.  In Cutler they has essentially drafted the Anti-Plummer.  Jake’s days are numbered.

I like Jake.  He does amazing things for his charities, and his drive and passion for keeping the spirit of fallen hero Pat Tillman alive deserves our admiration.  But Jake needs to learn a little self control and needs to try to stop fighting conformity.  Tossing the beard would be a nice, but being a civil member of society would be the place to start….
Dude, The Beard Has To Go!

Cavs Rap ‘05-’06

Posted in Cavs/NBA on May 24th, 2006

It is really hard to deal with, the fact that the Cavs season is actually OVER.  For the last month I have lived each day to get home and watch each game, living and dying with each and every shot.  When the rollar coaster ride came to an end(literally, I saw Game 7 from Cedar Point), the Cavs finished the year with 57 total wins and pushed the Pistons to the brink.  After a few days to collect my thoughts I wanted to put a pretty little bow on the ‘05-’06 version of the Cavs before looking ahead to ‘06-’07.  Here is my man-by-man look….

LeBron James - GRADE A- - This is probably the easiest grade I had to give.  Instead of pointing out what LeBron did, let me ask you, “What didn’t he do?”  It seemed every other night he was bcoming the “Youngest Player to do X in history”.  It is an understatment to say just how special he is, and how incredible it is going to be to watch him become whatever it is he becomes over the next 10-15 years.  LeBron nearly led the team in PPG, Rebounds and Assists, and after the injury to Larry Hughes, put the team on his back and led them to the 4th Seed.  He became the youngest player ever to win the NBA All-Star MVP, and finsihed 2nd in League MVP voting to Steve Nash.  I have a feeling next year that vote may turn out a little differently.  A couple things to improve on to get an A+, however would be on-the-ball defense and FT shooting.
King Indeed!

Larry Hughes - GRADE C - I am grading Larry specifically on the time he was on the floor, and have taken the injury into account.  It was a tough year for Hughes, professional and personally.  After signing the big contract in the off-season, his brother initially got sick soon after.  Larry then hurt the finger during the pre-season and was nevere really right the whole year.  He finally opted for the surgery Dec. 31, and after complications forced a 2nd operation, missed a total of 45 regular season games.  Even after Hughes came back it was easy to see that the finger was not healed and was affecting his jumper.  I was also slighlty disappointed with his Defense.  A 1st Team NBA Defender last season Larry never seemed as quick and showed an inability to stay in front of players he was defending.  I am going to write this season off for Larry and pass him with the expectation that he is going to come back strong next season and be the player we need to help LeBron.
Larry Gets A Pass For '05-'06

Zydrunas Ilgauskas - GRADE C - Big Z was a Big Disappointment for me this season.  I really expected Big things from him, and it just never happened.  It isn’t that Z didn’t have a good season, but as the season wore on, and especially in the playoffs, it seemd that Z just may not fit on this team.  I like Z and have respect and admiration for the way he has worked to get back to being healthy  but I wonder how many miles those feet actually have left.  On the court, Z is still slow to help, and by being late is often forced to foul putting the Cavs in a tough spot with very little depth on the front line.  In two playoff series that I thought Z could be factor he disappeared, being outplayed by Brendan Haywood in the Wizards series and allowing much smaller players to get key rebounds against Detroit.  There are still few quality centers in the league, so Z does have some worth, but I just don’t know if his future should be with the Cavs….
Will Z Be Along Side James For Long?
Drew Gooden - Grade B- - Drew is the ultimate Enigma.  He can be a monster for a quarter, a half, a game, a week, and then just as fast disappear never to be heard of again.  Drew’s strength is his offensive game and that affects his defense.  If Gooden gets it started early on offense, he can be a monster on the glass and plays hard-nosed defense.  If the shot isn’t falling early, Drew doesn’t play defense.  It is this inconsistency that has the Cavs in a serious quandry heading into the off-season.  At only 23, Drew is still a very young player.  Is he going to grow into the monster or the ghost?  IMHO, I would see if the Cavs could sign him to a shorter deal, one that benifits both parties.  If Drew is the monster, he becomes a FA sooner and gets a bigger payday.  If he disappears, the Cavs’ exposure is reduced.
Will It Be Gooden Plenty or Good As Gone?!?

Eric Snow - Grade C - A true Pro’s-Pro, E-Snow gives 100% every night.  Now on the downside of his career, Snow still plays tough D but is a virtual no-show offensively.  When he WAS able to add something on the offensive end, the Cavs were very successful, but it didn’t happen nearly enough.  It also appears to me that Snow has slowed a bit, and is now a liability on the break.  With cannonballs in LeBron and Larry, the PG had better be quick to keep up.  There seemed to be numerous times on the break that Snow couldn’t push the ball quickly enough.  He also struggled against pressure, taking 10+ seconds to get the Cavs into their sets putting pressure on the half-court offense.  This forced the Cavs to go to LeBron James as the primary ball-handler in the 2nd half of games, reducing his effectiveness and size mis-match.  I like Eric as a 15-20 minute per night guy off the bench, but his time as a starter in this league has come and gone.
Will He Be Smilin' If He Isn't Starting Next Season

Donyell Marshall - GRADE B- - Donyell was brought in to help stretch the defense and create operating room for LeBron and Larry.  ‘Yell pressed early in the season and forgot what had been successful for him early in his career.  Towards the end of the season, ‘Yell got back to hittin’ the glass and taking the ball to the basket to open up the outside shot.  Like many shooter, ‘Yell needs to get into a rhythem and standing and waiting for the ball makes it difficult.  The Cavs need to do a better job next year of calling plays for Marshall and Damon Jones, cutting them off screens to get them in the flow of the game.  I think a 2nd year in the system and for Marshall with LeBron will see a big improvement.  Marshall’s ability and desire to rebound and play somoe D makes him a valuable contributer.

Damon Jones - GRADE C- - Too much talk, not enogh walk for DJ.  When Damon finally decided to keep his yap shut he actually improved his play and his shot started to fall.  I think it has become obvious what his role will be on this team and the issue will be whether he chooses to accept it.  If Jones can handle being the ”Instant Offense” guy, who may play 10 minutes one night, then 30 another, yet not play at all the next, like he did in the playoffs he can be valuable as well.  Just like Donyell, the Cavs have to do a better job of getting Jones the ball in rhythem, instead of letting him stand in the corner for 22 seconds and expecting him to hit a shot.  No Defense seperates DJ from Marshall.

Anderson Varajao - GRADE B - We saw glimpses last season of what the future may hold for AV.  After hurting his shoulder while playing for his home country of Brazil I was concerned that he may lose a little of what made him a special player.  When he came back and got back into the flow, however, AV played even better than I thought.  Lightning in a bottle, all NBA teams would love to have a guy like Andy on their team.  Gets the tough rebounds, play tenacious D, takes a charge, and doesn’t back down to anyone.  In the playoffs, AV raised his game to ANOTHER level by being an offensive threat.  Along with LeBron, they ran the High-Screen and High Pick countless times to perfection.  Miami did plenty of it again last night with Shaq and DWade.  The future is bright for AV, and his coming out party might be a wave good-bye to Drew Gooden.

Ronald ‘Flip’ Murray - GRADE B - Flip did a great job for the Cavs after coming over at the trade deadline.  Check out this number….The Cavs were 21-9 with Murray in the starting lineup, including the Playoffs.  Pretty impressive.  He showed a knack for hitting the big shot and for providing some quick offense.  I would love to see Flip back, but he wants to be a starter and will probably take the biggest offer to allow him to do that.  IMHO he is best suited to come off the bench since non of his skills is top-notch and he will probably struggle long-term in the starting 5, especially if he ends up with a team that doesn’t have a creator like #23, which last time I checked no one does.

Rest of the Bench - GRADE D- - The biggest weakness of this team is its depth.  The Cavs need to do a better job of targeting those “Veteran’s Minimum” guys that can come in in a pinch and get the job done.  If you are going to compete with the Ben Wallace’s and Shaq’s of the League you had better have some big bodies to throw at them in a 7 game series.  Ira Newble and Alan Henderson were useless to us for most of the season.  Sasha Pavlovic needs to figure out that defense is going to be his way to the floor and Luke Jackson just needs to find a way to stay healthy for 2 minutes.  The wildcard is Martynas Andriuskevicius.  It will be interesting to see his development over the next could of seasons.

Mike Brown - GRADE B- - For a first year coach to win 50 games is pretty special.  For a team to do it only 3 years after the team won only 17 games, and after addng 8 new players is almost incredible.  There were definitely growing pains, and at times Brown looked a little over his head, but I think the Playoffs are going to be Brown’s time to shine.  He outcoached both coaches he faced if you look at the body of work, and if Danny Ferry can add some pieces hat think ‘D’ first, we just may have something in Cleveland.

Those are my thoughts….Please comment and let me know what you think, agree or disagree….
